Jenkins Talks with Media About MVSU and Short Week; Berry Picks Up Weekly Honor

MONTGOMERY – The second game in five days is just ahead for the Alabama State University football team as the Hornets are in the midst of playing four games over a 20-day period.

ASU will not get a lot of practice time in before boarding a plane for Houston Wednesday morning with the game against Texas Southern slated for Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Head Coach Brian Jenkins talked with the media today via the Southwestern Athletic Conference Head Coaches Teleconference and talked about the Hornets victory over Mississippi Valley State last Saturday evening.

"It was a good victory and it's always good to win," Jenkins said.  "We went down and played Mississippi Valley and it was a tough and physical football game.  The score did not show how physical or how tight the game was."

"We went down and we executed and capitalized on some of their mistakes.  I tell you what that football team (MVSU) in another year or so are going to be something to reckon with.  I think Coach Comegy is doing a phenomenal job.  Those guys played with a lot of class, effort and they played relentless.  They really made us earn everything we were able to accomplish."

Jenkins thoughts did not last long on Mississippi Valley as the short week of preparation along with another solid Texas Southern team took over the conversation.

"Now we have to line up on a short week and play another top football team in Texas Southern," Jenkins said.  "They are very talented.  They run it very well and their quarterback is really good.  They have a couple of guys on special teams that can make something happen.  They have the best special teams thus far I have seen on film.  So we have to make sure we are really sound and solid in that area."

"It is going to be another hard-fought football game.  It's a good thing we get a chance to play on ESPNU and get a chance to represent the conference well.  So I'm sure both teams will be ready and put on a good show."

Junior linebacker Kourtney Berry also picked up a national weekly honor as College Sports Madness named him the Southwestern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Berry finished the game against MVSU with a game-high 13 stops.  He also had two tackles behind the line of scrimmage and was credited with half a sack.

For the season Berry now not only leads ASU, but is the SWAC's leading tackler with 60 total stops, averaging 15 per game.  His number has him ranked second nationally in all of FCS football.

The live telecast will originate from BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston.  Along with the ESPNU telecast, the game can be heard live on the ASU Hornets Sports Network along with HSRN Satellite Sirius XM Radio channel 108.
