ATLANTA—The Alabama State University men's golf team shattered both team and individual records coming from four strokes back to win the prestigious Black College Hall of Fame Tournament held in Atlanta on the Mills Brown Golf Course.
The Hornets matched yesterday's 10-under- par round with another 10-under-par 278 in today's action and actually pulled away from first day leader Savannah State and Tennessee State, whom they were tied with after the first day of action. ASU finished 15 strokes ahead of its nearest competitor.
The Hornets combined 20-under-par score shattered the former team record for 36 holes which was set two years ago at the James Shannon Invitational when ASU shot a two-day total of 1-over-par.
Jose Rodriguez completed his tournament matching his score of yesterday with another 6-under-par round (66). He finished 12-under for the tournament and his score was the lowest score in the tournament giving him the all-around individual medalist.
Rodriguez' 12-under par finish was not only a career best, but also an individual school record for 36 holes. Former ASU great John Montgomery previously held the record with a 7-under-par finish at the James Shannon Invitational in 2010.
Branson Ferrier and
Francis Berthiaume both shot 69's in today's round and both finished at 5-under-par for the tournament.
Robert Grant shot a 74 in today's action and finished two-over and
Corey Price finished 12-over-par after shooting a 77 today.
Individual golfers for ASU were Ian Mmbano who shot a 1-under 71 today and finished one-over-par.
Chris Wilson shot a 76 today to finish five-over-par.
“This was a great birthday present for me this weekend,” Head Coach Gary Grandison said. “They played smart throughout the tournament. This course has its challenges, but again, they played very, very smart.”
“We avoided the rain for the most part. It did drizzle for a short stint, but the weather for the most part was pleasant and the conditions were good.”
The Hornets will continue their Fall schedule on Oct. 8-9 at the SkyHawk Fall Classic in Parish Landing, Tenn. The Classic is hosted by the University of Tennessee at Martin.
