Head Women's Basketball Coach
Freda Freeman-Jackson and her staff have signed three freshmen that will be attending Alabama State in the fall of 2013, during the early signing period.
Tiara Calloway, Kayla Tucker and Britney Wright will be joining the Lady Hornets roster adding more depth to her young bench.
Calloway, a 6-7 center from Newnan, Ga. attends Newnan High School and averages 10 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks per game.
“Tiara puts me in the mind of Crystal Kitt (a former Lady Hornet),” said Freeman-Jackson. “The difference between the two is that Tiara doesn't quit have the offensive play that Crystal did, but she does have great up- size and she runs the floor well. We are just going to need to get her in D-I shape and once that happens she will have a great career here at Alabama State.
Tucker is a 5-7 point guard from Southmoore High School in Oklahoma City, OK. The Saber Cats point guard averages 12 points, two rebounds and three assists per game. She earned Honorable Mention of State.
“Kayla reminds me of a John Stockton type of player,” Freeman-Jackson commented. “She's a typical fundamentalist that can play on both ends of the floor. She can also hit the outside shot.”
Wright, a 5-9 guard/forward from Villia Rica, Ga. The Villia Rica high school student was last year's MVP, the recipient of the Captain's Award and an All-Area and All- Region player. Wright also participates on the track team and runs the 4x1 and 4x4, she also does the triple jump and she was an Offensive MVP track runner.
“Britney is an inside/out type of player similar to
Ashley Jones (a member of the Lady Hornets),” said Coach Freeman-Jackson. “The only difference is that Britney can play great defense and she can put the ball in the hole. One thing that I noticed about Britney is that she can shoot the three and that's Ashley has not developed yet and that should bring a lot to the game.”
“We are really excited about all three of the recruits coming in, because these players had offers at other schools but they all decided to come to Alabama State. It is going to be really interesting with these freshman players coming in especially with the young ladies that we have returning. We are only going to be losing two players off of this season's team. We should have a great nucleus of players coming back on next year, but I hoping that this year takes care of itself and that we will be coming of a championship season.
