Golf Teams Open Play at PGA Minority Championship

Round 1 Results

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.
– The Alabama State University golf teams opened play at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship Friday at the PGA Golf Club. The ASU men carded a first round 309 while the women's squad posted a 356.

The Hornets are currently in sixth-place in the team competition and the Lady Hornets ended the first day in fifth-place.

On the men's side, freshman Sam Strachan led the way in the opening round firing a two-over-par 74 on the par 72, 6,830-yard Wanamaker Course. His total had him in a tie for eighth in the individual medalist competition heading into the second round.

Senior Kyle Deemester posted a 76 and sophomore John Montgomery shot a 78 to join Strachan in the 70s. Freshman Michael Stringfellow finished with an 81 and sophomore Greg Keafer had a 92 to round out the ASU lineup.

Texas-Pan American carded a 290 to sit atop the team leaderboard after the first round. Tennessee State was second at 295 followed by Jackson State at 297. Pan Am's Kevin Kisakossian lead the medalist competition after opening the event with a four-under-par 68.

The Lady Hornets, playing on the par 72, 6,040-yard Ryder Course, were paced by freshman Aileen Meredith's three-over-par 75. She finished the day in fifth-place in the individual competition.

Danielle Robinson shot an 86 with D'Andrielle Robinson (95) and Brittanie Brooks (100) rounding out the ASU performers. Taaj Hubbard withdrew from competition on day one.

Bethune-Cookman leads the team standings following their opening round 295. Hampton is second at 320 and UT-Pan American is third at 322. BCC's Kim Wong fired a two-under-par 70 to grab the lead in medalist competition.

Play continues at the PGA Minority Championship for both ASU teams Saturday and Sunday.
