SHREVEPORT, La.
– For the second straight game, the Alabama State University baseball team played late into the night at the 2010 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament but Thursday the results were different as Grambling State handed the Hornets a 17-2 loss in seven innings at Fairgrounds Field.

With the loss, ASU (13-27) slips into the elimination round of the tournament bracket. Bama State meets Texas Southern Friday at Noon in a rematch of the tournament opener for both squads.

Grambling State pitcher Odingo Davila held the ASU bats in check allowing just five hits and two runs while striking out six in seven innings of work. Four errors by the Bama State defense also proved costly as the Tigers scored runs in six of the seven frames.

GSU grabbed the early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first and added another run in the second for a 3-0 advantage.

Alabama State plated its only two runs of the game in the bottom of the second. Lloyd Kelly and Drew Quinney drew back-to-back walks and advanced a base on a successful sacrifice bunt by Nykellan Isaac. Jourdan Mott drove in a run with a groundout to short and Kejuan Riley doubled home the second score of the frame.

The Tigers responded with four runs in their next at bat before tacking on a run in the fifth, five runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh.

Riley was the Hornets top offensive performer going 2-for-2 at the plate with and an RBI.

The winner between ASU and TSU advances to face Grambling State at 6 p.m. Friday in semifinal action.
