PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – The Alabama State University men’s and women’s golf teams concluded their 2009-10 seasons with fifth-place finishes Sunday at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship played at the PGA Golf Club.
The Hornets climbed one spot on the final day finishing with a three-day score of 926 including a final round 310, while the Lady Hornets carded their lowest round of the tournament 333 en route to a tournament total of 1023.
A trio of ASU linksters garnered Top 20 finishes on the men’s side led by freshman Sam Strachan, who finished 13th at 225 including a final round two-over-par 74.
Sophomore John Montgomery, who also posted a final round 74, finished tied for 17th at 229 and senior Kyle Demeester earned a 19th-place tie (230) after shooting a 78 in his final collegiate round.
Freshman Michael Stringfellow finished at 250 (46th) and sophomore Greg Keafer posted a 259 (T-57th) to round out the Hornets’ lineup at the event.
Texas-Pan American held off a final round charge by several teams in earning the wire-to-wire team title with a 54-hole score of 872. Tennessee State finished second at 874 and Jackson State was third at 900 followed by Bethune-Cookman (907), Alabama State, Savannah State (930), North Carolina Central (946), Florida A&M (947), UAPB (968), Texas Southern (968), Grambling State (968), Hampton (1002), Winston-Salem State (1019) and Prairie View A&M (1022).
UTPA’s Armen Kirakossian finished at 211 in capturing the individual medalist crown by two strokes.
On the women’s side, freshman Aileen Meredith led the ASU contingent with a sixth-place finish. Meredith shot a 54-hole 229 including a final round 78.
Sophomore Danielle Robinson, who joined Meredith in the Top 20, also carded a final round 78 on her way to a 16th-place (244) finish.
The remainder of the Lady Hornets’ lineup included sophomores Brittanie Brooks in 28th (288) and D’Andrielle Robinson in 30th (294). Freshman Taaj Hubbard posted rounds of 86-81 but was unable to complete her first round at the event thus removing her from the individual competition.
Bethune-Cookman dominated the team competition finishing with a three-round total of 885 and winning by 53 shots. All five of BCC’s golfers tallied Top 10 showings. Texas-Pan American finished second at 938 followed by Hampton (949), South Carolina State (1008), Alabama State, Lincoln (1041) and Tennessee State (1083).
Kim Wong of UTPA led the medalist competition from start to finish tallying an even-par 216.
