ALEXANDRIA, La.
– The Alabama State University men's golf team entered Wednesday's final round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship at Oak Wing Golf Club just three shots behind tournament leader Jackson State and despite a solid round of 303 on the final day the Hornets ended the day three strokes behind the Tigers.

ASU earned its second consecutive runner-up finish at the SWAC Championship finishing with a 54-hole score of 916 as JSU shot a 913 en route to earning its third straight league title.

Freshman Michael Stringfellow saved his best for last firing an even-par 72 Wednesday as the team's top performer. Stringfellow's solid round vaulted him from 16th to eighth place in the final individual standings and also earned him second-team All-SWAC honors. He finished with a three-day tally of 231.

Fellow ASU freshman Sam Strachan was the squad's top overall performer at the tournament finishing in a tie for second at 225. Strachan posted three consecutive rounds of 75 on his way to garnering freshman medalist honors and first-team All-SWAC recognition. It marks the second straight year that an ASU player has been the freshman medalist.

Sophomore John Montgomery, the defending SWAC individual champion, finished tied for fourth at 227 following a final round 75. His performance was good enough to earn his second consecutive first-team All-SWAC honor. Senior Kyle Demeester was the Hornets' fourth Top 10 performer finishing with a 233 (T-10th) and earning second-team All-SWAC accolades.

Sophomore Greg Keafer rounded out the ASU lineup in 23rd-place (250). Senior Brendan Prouse, who played only as an individual in the event, also garnered second-team All-SWAC honors after finishing tied for 10th at 233 (76-80-77).

Jackson State's final round 303 allowed the Tigers to hold off Alabama State for the second straight year and gave JSU its 21st SWAC title in the last 22 seasons. Texas Southern (617) finished 30 shots behind JSU in third-place followed by Grambling State (949), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (985), Prairie View A&M (997), Southern (1025), Alabama A&M (1077), Mississippi Valley State (1241) and Alcorn State (1409).

Grambling's Jonathan Coleman led the individual medalist competition wire-to-wire finishing with a 54-hole score of 219.

The Alabama State men's golf team concludes its season on May 6-9 at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
