First Round Results
ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Alabama State University men's golf team opened with a round of 313 on day one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Tournament Monday at the Oak Wing Golf Club. The Hornets are currently tied for third in the team competition with Grambling State.
Freshman Sam Strachan led the way for ASU in the opening round carding a three-over-par 75. His performance left him just three strokes behind individual medalist leader Jonathan Coleman (72) of Grambling.
Bama State's
John Montgomery, the defending SWAC individual champion, ended the day in a tie for 12th after carding a 78 while senior
Kyle Demeester is tied for 14th following a 79. Michael Stringfellow shot 81 (23rd) and
Gregory Keafer posted 84 (T-26th) to round out the tournament lineup for the Hornets.
Jackson State leads the team competition after firing an opening round 308. Texas Southern is in second at 312 with ASU and Grambling one shot behind. Arkansas-Pine Bluff is fifth at 321 followed by Prairie View A&M (331), Alabama A&M (347), Southern (361), Mississippi Valley State (405) and Alcorn State (459).
Tournament action at the SWAC Championship continues with 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday on the par 72, 7,043-yard layout at Oak Wing.
