BOSSIER CITY, La.
– The Alabama State University women’s basketball team, who finished tied for sixth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference during the regular season, had two Lady Hornets receive All-SWAC team honors as announced Tuesday night during the annual tournament banquet.

The all-conference squads were selected in a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information staffs, along with a group of selected media.

Shanice Merritt, a 6-2, senior, center from Tuscaloosa, Ala., earned third-team All-SWAC honors after averaging 5.6 points per game and leading the conference in blocked shots. Merritt totaled 62 blocks and averaged 2.3 swats per game.

After amassing a team-best 16 double-double performances this season, Tanika Jackson, a 5-10 junior forward from Saginaw, Mich., garnered first-team All-SWAC recognition. Jackson finished the regular season with a team best 14.3 points and 10.4 rebounds a game.

The Lady Hornets will open SWAC Tournament play Wednesday at Noon against No.2-seed Prairie View in the Centurytel Center in Bossier City, La.
