MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University men's and women's golf teams both carded solid opening round performances Monday at the ASU Fall Classic held at Lagoon Park Golf Course.
While rain kept all the men's competitors from finishing the first round, the weather did not hamper the ASU men's squad as the Hornets posted a program 18-hole low score of one-under-par 287 to own a two-shot clubhouse lead over Tennessee State. The ASU women's team ended round one just two strokes out of the lead following a score of 340.
ASU senior
Kyle Demeester, a two-time All-SWAC golfer, sits atop the individual medalist leaderboard after shooting a three-under-par 69. Hornet freshman
Sam Strachan finished his first collegiate round in a tie for second following a one-under-par 71. Sophomore
John Montgomery, last season's SWAC Championship medalist, carded an even-par round 72 to sit in fourth place.
On the women's side, ASU freshman
Aileen Meredith carded a 78 to share the first round lead with Tennessee State's Jamie Pierce.
Danielle Robinson, a first-team All-SWAC golfer last season, is in third after shooting 81 on Monday.
First round play will resume Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude with final round of play slated for a shotgun start at 8 a.m. at Lagoon Park.
