Women's Soccer Opens Season this Weekend
women's soccer preview
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After a couple weeks of preseason practice, the Alabama State University women’s soccer team opens its 2009 season this weekend with a pair of road contests in Charleston, S.C. ASU faces Charleston Southern Friday at 4 p.m., before battling The Citadel Sunday at 1 p.m.

Third-year head coach Jodie Smith looks to build on last year’s successful campaign that included a program-first appearance at the SWAC tournament.

ASU returns seven players, including four starters, and welcomes a group of six talented newcomers. Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Nash, who led the nation in saves per game last year, and junior Monique Sylvester, who has moved to forward this year, look to lead the improving Alabama State squad.

The Lady Hornets will host nine home games this season at renovated Hornets Stadium, which features a brand new playing surface. ASU’s home opener versus Tennessee Tech is slated for Friday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m.
