Montgomery — Alabama State University head women's basketball coach Freda Freeman-Jackson is a firm believer in the benefits of a well organized summer basketball camp.
Freeman-Jackson is hosting her 10th Division 1 camp this week. More than 100 girls ages 8 to 18 are participating.
“Fundamentals play an important factor when it comes down to playing basketball,” said Freeman-Jackson after the conclusion of the second day of camp Tuesday. “The young ladies are learning to pass, shoot and do layups. They have been playing 5-on-5, 1-on-1, hot shot and gotcha to make the camp fun”.
“When a young lady leaves camp by the end week, we are sure that she would have picked up at least one skill and developed it into a skill she will probably use during the upcoming basketball season,” said the ASU women's coach.
Eighty percent of this year's participants are returning campers, said Freeman-Jackson. Many of them have attended the camp every year since the first year.
“We have had great retention,” said Freeman-Jackson. “The only time that we may lose a person is if they have graduated or they play for an AAU team.”
The camp concludes Thursday.
