The Alabama State University women's bowling team opened the 2008-09 season with great promise and excitement.
The Lady Hornets enjoyed a pretty successful campaign. From the competitive play of the SWAC to matches against some of the nation's elite bowling squads like Nebraska, Vanderbilt and Arkansas State, Alabama State consistently faced quality opponents at the lanes. More importantly, Bama State battled those same tough opponents in hard fought contests.
First-year head coach
Andrew Chatmon brought positive change and a new level of competition to the Lady Hornet program. The team, which had just one senior, was lead by sophomore Dominique Elston and junior
Brittney McKinney 160 pins per game averages.
“I am very proud of this team,” said Chatmon. “They have come a long way since I took over and I look for us to continue building the level of pride and competitiveness we displayed this season.”
ASU competed at the SWAC Championship for the second straight year. In addition, the Lady Hornets kept matches close all season, staying within 15-20 pins against most foes en route to a sixth place finish in the league.
A major accomplishment for the Lady Hornets was the naming of
Paige Roquemore and
Syntara Tyler to the SWAC All-Academic team.
The future looks bright for the ASU bowling team with six players returning next year. Chatmon also hopes to add two or three more members to assist the squad in its quest for a SWAC Championship.
