Track and Field Concludes Competition at SWAC Championship

HOUSTON — The Alabama State University outdoor track and field teams concluded regular season competition this past weekend at the SWAC Championship hosted by Texas Southern University. The ASU women’s squad posted a third-place finish while the men’s team earned a fifth-place showing.

Jackson State captured the women’s championship with a total of 207 points and was led by Danielle Miller and Jemu Zar Zar, who were named Outstanding Female Field Events Athlete and Outstanding Female Running Events Athlete, respectively. Grambling won the men’s championship with 159.50 points, behind a strong showing from Darwin Price, the 2009 Outdoor Outstanding Male Running Events Athlete. Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Arthur Thomas was named the 2009 Outstanding Male Field Events Athlete.

ASU’s top scoring female athlete was junior Clarissa Johnson with 23 points while junior Robert Gunn finished with 26 points to pace the Hornet men. Twenty-nine different athletes tallied points for Alabama State.

Several Bama State athletes recorded NCAA qualifying marks during the event including Delorean Peek and Jonathan Franklin in the 400m and Tokeyah Jones in the women’s 100m. The Lady Hornets’ 4x100m relay team won the event title while tallying an NCAA qualifying time.

Sophomore Shexnieavia Bryant set a new SWAC Championship record with a hammer throw of 47.06m (154’05”) en route to capturing the SWAC individual title in the event. Gunn also earned a SWAC title in the 5,000m.
