Montgomery – Alabama State (14-11) swept both games of a doubleheader Wednesday at Paterson Field, defeating Morehouse 7-6 and 15-6.
ASU Kyle Norris (1-0) picked up the win in the opener. Norris worked 2.2 innings, allowing just three hits, one run (unearned) and four strike outs. Morehouse's Andre Dixon (0-1) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing six hits, five walks and six runs (four earned).
Alabama State opened the scoring in the first inning when Morehouse's Bryan Butcher booted a grounder at second that allowed Jordan Mims to score from third. Chris Davis then stole home on a wild pitch to give ASU a 2-0 lead.
Morehouse tied the game in the fourth inning on Henteves Jester's sacrifice fly to left that scored David Harvey.
The largest lead change of the game came in the fifth inning as the Maroon Tigers took a three-run lead. Harvey doubled home two runs and then scored on a Jarrell James single.
The Hornets came back in the bottom of the sixth, tying the game 6-6. Mims blasted a home run that scored Ray Pickering, who had reached base an error, and Drew Quinney, who had singled up the middle. James singled to score John Solomon, who reached based on a base hit to right center.
The Hornets won the game in their final at bat in the seventh Josh Clemons singled down the leftfield line to score Gerald Washington, who reached base on a fielder's choice.
Drew Quinney got the win for the Hornets in the nightcap, pitching 3.1 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out three.
The Hornets opened the scoring with a five-run burst in the second inning. A double by Cameron Webman drove home Lloyd Kelly and Clemons. Solomon singled to right field, advancing Webman to third, then stole second. Mims walked to load the bases. Webman scored on a wild pitch. Solomon scored on a sacrifice fly by Darrion Pedro. And T.J. Griggs singled up the middle to score Mims.
The Maroon Tigers bounced back with four runs in the top of the third inning, but the Hornets pounded Morehouse pitching for 10 more runs in the next four innings.
The Hornets are off until the April 8 when they travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. EST.
