Birmingham – Alabama State guard Brandon Brooks was named Southwestern Athletic Conference Player of the Year and Coach Lewis Jackson was selected Coach of the Year Tuesday, one day before the start of this year's postseason tournament.
Brandon, who averaged 14.2 points and 4.1 rebounds during the regular season, was the only player in the conference to finish in the top 6 in scoring, assists, free throw percentage and field goal percentage. His 6.9 assists per game easily led the league and rank him fifth nationally in that statistic. Brooks was also selected to the 2009 First Team All-Conference.
Chief Kickingstallionsims was named Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the Third Team All-SWAC list. The 7-foot center for the Hornets averages nine points per contest. His 76 blocked shots this season in the best in the SWAC and the 11th best total in the nation. Chief also received honors on the All-Academic Team.
Andrew Hayles and Roland Fitch received Second Team All-Conference honors.
Hayles averaged 13.1 points per game and 3.4 rebounds. Fitch averaged 10 points per game and 3.5 rebounds.
This is the first time in years that four ASU players have been named to the SWAC's All-Conference teams.
