ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Alabama State University men's and women's golf teams earned the tournament titles at the recently completed LA SWAC Open hosted by Grambling State at Links on the Bayou Golf Club.
The Lady Hornets, who carded a tournament total of 661 (330-331), boasted the individual medalist and runner-up finishers. Freshman Aileen Meredith captured the individual crown following rounds of 79-75=154, while teammate
Danielle Robinson shot a 36-hole 161 (80-81).
Other golfers competing for ASU at the event included Taaj Hubbard in a tie for fifth at 170 (83-87),
Brittanie Brooks in eighth with 176 (88-88) and
D'Andrielle Robinson was 10th at 179 (91-88).
The ASU men's squad fired a near school record two-round total of 586 (297-289) en route to the tournament victory. Freshman Sam Strachan led the Hornets with a runner-up finish shooting 140 (71-69). Senior Kyle Deemester finished third at 143 (73-70) and Brendon Prouse was fifth at 148 (76-72) giving the Hornets three of the top five finishers.
Greg Keafer posted a 157 (77-80) to finish tied for 11th along with ASU teammate Mike Stringfellow (79-78=157).
The Hornets captured the team crown by 17 strokes over Grambling State (603). Arkansas-Pine Bluff finished third at 620 followed by Southern (648), Texas Southern (674) and Prairie View (690).
The ASU women return to action on Oct. 25-27 at the Troy Women's Invitational, while the men's squad hits the links again at the rescheduled National Black College Hall of Fame Tournament in Atlanta on Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
